Grading the design system

An identity written down is an identity that gets ignored. Written as code, it can check every new surface against itself before anything ships.

A brand looks great in the guidelines PDF and then dies in production. Every new surface, every rushed deadline, every new hand pulls it apart. Now point a few agents at it, producing work at machine speed, and the drift goes from a trickle to a flood.

So I stopped shipping the brand as a document and started shipping it as code. Tokens, components, rules. The thing a designer builds inside and the thing an agent builds inside are the same thing, with the same guardrails.

On top of that, the brand rules run as a check. A piece of work comes out, the system asks whether it sits inside the system, and flags what does not. That runs today.

What I am building is the grade. Not just pass or fail against the rules, but scored against the brand the way I would score it, learning from every time I overrule the machine’s pick. That override is the most valuable thing the system makes, because it is taste, written down.

The craft did not change. What changed is that the craft can now enforce itself, which means it scales past the few people who hold it in their heads.

Honest version: the guardrail is live, the self-grading is in build. We are partway up.
